Dr. Kalam was successful to develop the Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III projects. In the 1970s he also directed two projects which developed the ballistic missiles from the technology of the SLV programme, for this he was given secret funds from then PM Indira Gandhi through her discretionary powers as the Union Cabinet was against these projects.

Former President and renowned scientist Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam once said the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is a hi-tech deterrence system, which is possessed only by India, adding “BrahMos has certainly made India proud to posses an advantage of high technology deterrence system which no country in the world has and has a fantastic partner like Russia.”
